Certified Behavioral Health Technician - $375

The CBHT credential is for people who assist primary counselors and therapeutic staff by providing clinical support services to adults or children who are receiving treatment for substance use and/or mental health conditions in residential programs, in-patient settings or community-based programs. 

The CBHT designates competency in the domains of Foundations of Behavioral Health; Direct Care and Recovery Support; Conflict Resolution and Safety; and Professional Responsibility.


The CBHT credential is recognized for billable services under Florida’s State Medicaid Plan.


The CBHT requires a high school diploma, general equivalency degree or higher.

All CBHTs have demonstrated competency through training, experience and clinical supervision in the performance domains of 

  • Clinical Competence

  • Maintaining Client and Personal Safety

  • Documentation and Patient Confidentiality

  • Ethical and Professional Responsibilities

Exam Requirements

Formal Education:

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree High School Diplomas or General Equivalence Degrees must be eligible for acceptance by colleges or universities holding nationally recognized accreditation through the United States Department of Education and/or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

30 hours of content specific training, allocated as follows:

  1. Clinical Competence (8 hours) 

  2. Maintaining Client and Personal Safety (4 hours) 

  3. Documentation and Patient Confidentiality (4 hours) 

  4. Ethical and Professional Responsibilities (4 hours) 

  5. Electives (10 hours)


Related Work Experience:

1,000 hours of behavioral health-related work experience. Work experience must be directly related to the core competencies of the credential and must have occurred within the last 5 years. Volunteer experience is not eligible for certification purposes


On-the-job Supervision:

24 hours of on-the-job supervision of the applicant’s performance of behavioral health-related services. Of the 24 hours, a minimum of 4 hours of supervision must be provided and documented in each of the following categories. The remaining 8 hours may be allocated across any category.

  1. Clinical Competence

  2. Maintaining Client and Personal Safety

  3. Documentation and Patient Confidentiality

  4. Ethical and Professional Responsibilities


For certification purposes, the FCB benchmarks reasonable and achievable supervision at the rate of 3 hours per week/156 hours per year. Eligible clinical supervision can be individual, one-on-one supervision and/or observation of skills OR group supervision/case staffings.


At least 50% of the hours of clinical supervision must be individual, one-on-one supervision and/or observation of skills. No more than 50% of the required hours of supervision may be in a group setting. Administrative on-the-job supervision will not be accepted for certification purposes.


Three (3) professional letters of recommendation for certification.


Certified Behavioral Health Technician Exam

Continuing Education: 

10 hours per year. Training content must be related to at least one of the CBHT performance domains as indicated under Content Specific Training. Continuing Education (CE) credit hours must be non-repetitive (i.e., the same course cannot be claimed more than one time during each credentialed period, even if the course is taken annually).



Annual, on June 30th of each calendar year.
